Introduction
Last Friday, November 17, we held the webinar we had been organizing for some time on a very current topic in the packaging world namely Eco design and recycling. The goal was to provide participants with useful information on how to make their product packaging more and more sustainable in terms of the circular economy.
Avery Dennison's two special guests, Paola and Fabrizio, started with an introduction on the topic of Eco-design and sustainable labels by making a comparison with standard labels and then delved into the recyclability of packaging with guidelines es concrete examples (e.g. we will illustrate the recycling process of some packaging such as PET or HDPE). Finally they explained in detail how the recycling of paper liners takes place and what are the benefits for a company (with practical examples).
What is meant by Eco Design?
Eighty percent of the environmental impact of products is determined by the design phase (source European Union).
Eco Design is an approach to design that considers the entire life cycle of products. In addition to assessing the functionality, appearance and ecological impact of products during their production and use, it anticipates the design phase to study reuse and/or collection and recycling solutions at the end of life.
What is siliconate and why recycle it?
Most adhesive labels are produced by means of the liner i.e., a siliconized paper backing.
The liner is placed under the printed label and acts as a protective and transport element.
Once the siliconized liner has done its job it usually becomes waste however thanks to Cycle4green it can be recycled by separating the silicone from the cellulose fibers.
What benefits are there for the company?
It improves corporate sustainability credentials:
Recycling improves carbon footprint,
recycling reduces consumption of virgin raw material.
It turns waste into new recycled paper:
silicon paper is a resource when recycled,
a loop is created from waste to new roll paper.
It reduces waste:
siliconized liners are still mostly incinerated or sent to landfill,
+400 000 tons of Liner are used annually in Europe and still very little is recycled.
It reduces Costs:
Helps reduce costs your disposal costs.
